For years, much of coastal Croatia was associated with easy-drinking wines designed for holiday terraces. Motovun wine represents a different direction.
Perched above the Mirna River valley in inland Istria, Motovun is better known for medieval walls and truffle forests than for wine. That is beginning to change. Beyond the postcard views and summer tourism lies a small but serious wine scene focused on quality, character and restraint.
Hills above the coast
Motovun sits away from the busiest coastal resorts, at altitude, where cooler nights help preserve acidity and structure. Vineyards cling to steep slopes around the hilltop town, benefiting from a mix of Mediterranean sunshine and inland freshness. The soils are rich in marl and flysch, giving wines both texture and tension.
This is not the Croatia of bulk tourist pours. Here, growers are working with lower yields and greater attention to detail, producing wines that reflect place rather than volume.
Malvasia with intent
Istrian Malvasia is the region’s calling card, but on the Motovun wine scene it takes on added depth. Expect citrus and orchard fruit, yes, but also saline lift and a subtle almond bitterness on the finish. Handled carefully, it can age gracefully and develop remarkable complexity.
Teran, the region’s native red grape, thrives on these slopes as well. Naturally high in acidity and rich in dark berry character, it produces reds that are structured, vibrant and distinctly Istrian.
Beyond the tourist bottle
For years, much of coastal Croatia was associated with easy-drinking wines designed for holiday terraces. Motovun wine represents a different direction. A younger generation of producers is investing in modern cellars, organic practices and patient élevage. The ambition is clear: to produce wines that can stand confidently on export markets, not just local restaurant lists.
Quality here is no longer accidental. It is deliberate.
As interest grows in authentic, regional European wines, Motovun’s combination of altitude, native varieties and serious intent positions it as one of Croatia’s most compelling inland regions.
If you are looking to explore Croatian wine beyond the familiar coastal labels, Motovun is a thoughtful place to begin.
