Pronounced Go-REE-shka BER-da, Goriška Brda is often introduced as “the Tuscany of Slovenia”. The comparison is understandable. Rolling hills, terraced vineyards and cypress-lined ridges stretch towards the Italian border. It is a beautiful place to grow grapes. Increasingly, however, Brda is stepping out from that borrowed description and asserting itself as a serious wine region in its own right.
Between the Alps and the Adriatic
Brda sits on Slovenia’s western frontier, pressed up against Friuli in north-east Italy. The region shares not only a border but a climate and a culture with its neighbour. Warm Adriatic influences meet cooler Alpine air, creating long growing seasons while preserving natural acidity. The soils, known locally as opoka, a layered mix of marl and sandstone, lend structure and mineral depth.
This is a landscape built for balance rather than excess.
The home of Rebula
At the heart of Brda lies Rebula, the region’s defining grape. Known across the border as Ribolla Gialla, Rebula thrives on these slopes. Its naturally high acidity and deep root systems make it well suited to increasingly warm summers. It is a grape of quiet resilience.
In skilled hands, Rebula produces wines of texture and poise, capable of ageing and evolving with grace. It also underpins Brda’s long-standing expertise in skin-contact and orange winemaking. While orange wine may feel like a modern trend elsewhere, in Brda these techniques have been refined over decades, shared across the border with Friuli in a tradition that long predates marketing categories.

Beyond the postcard
For years, Brda’s beauty risked overshadowing its seriousness. Today, a confident generation of growers is focused less on comparisons and more on identity. Lower yields, careful farming and patient winemaking are becoming the norm rather than the exception.
Goriška Brda is no longer simply the Tuscany of Slovenia. It is a mature, self-assured region whose native grapes and long-honed techniques give it a distinctive voice in European wine. For those seeking depth beyond the familiar, Brda offers wines rooted in history yet firmly oriented towards the future.
